One of the most effective ways to maximize your earnings while keeping your money liquid is to build an investment "ladder".  An investment ladder is a series of investments placed at different term intervals.  For example let's say you have a total of $6,000 in your regular share savings account.  You can withdraw the full $6,000 anytime but you may not truly need more than about $2,000 over the course of the next six months.  In order to increase your interest income you may want to take $4,000 and invest it in a series of $1,000 share certificates with terms of 6, 12, 18 and 24 months.  Each certificate then becomes a "step" in your investment ladder.  By building a ladder you diversify your investment, placing some money for a shorter term (maintaining a degree of liquidity) and you place some of your money for longer terms to maximize your earnings.  At the end of six months when the shortest term certificate matures if you need the money you cash it in.  Conversely, if you do not need the money you roll the shorter term certificate into a higher earning 24 month certificate.  At that point you again have a 6, 12, 18 and 24 month certificate.  If you continue this cycle by the time the third certificate matures and is rolled over you have a portfolio of four certificates, all with original terms of 24 months but each with maturity dates at 6 month intervals.
